In an announcement this morning at Facebook headquarters, Mark Zuckerberg said, “At Facebook, our mission is to give people the power to share and make people more connected.” And with that he handed the mic to Instagram’s co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom to tell the world about Video on Instagram.

Systrom said,”As humans we create tools to remember. We want to take a moment and save it forever.” Instagram’s mission is to capture and share the world’s moments. Systrom shared that in just over two years there have been 16 billion photos shared on Instagram,  those images get one billion Likes every day, and that 130 million people use Instagram each month.  Systrom also said that Instagram has always been about three things: Speed, simplicity and beauty.

Video on Instagram

Systrom went on to say,” Instagram hasn’t changed. We’ve made it better.” Starting today, iOS and Android users can take 15 seconds of video, use one of 13 new custom filters (designed by an artist who specializes in video), select a cover frame and share it. The shared video will appear in your feed just like an image.

That’s Not All…Cinema

But Systrom had another surprise up his sleeve with the announcement of Cinema. Systrom talked about how most of us shoot shaky videos that look amateur. And because this is Instagram after all, they want your videos to be beautiful.  So what did they do? They teamed up with video scientists and brought us gorgeous stabilized videos that look like something out of Hollywood called Cinema.  Systrom closed with, “Now you have the power of Cinema in your pocket.”
