MarketingLand.com has announced a new research study finding that for every hour the average American spends online with their personal computers, 16 minutes (or 27%) are spent on social media. This has big implications for businesses looking to stay relevant by targeting online audiences where they hang out. Rounding out the top of the list were Entertainment (9 minutes of every hour), and Shopping (5 minutes).

Those using email marketing will be happy to hear that email ranks an impressive three minutes out of every hour, beating out news, travel, lifestyle and the spicy “adult” category. Even while at home, the average Joe isn’t taking a break from the office, with another three minutes of each hour spent on business.

This confirms a number of other recent reports that suggest email and social media marketing remain the best way to reach consumers online. Do these results reflect how you spend your time online?
